Bob Owens has more guts than I do

My poor wife must think I'm insane. Maybe I am. I've been on the internet since before we called it "internet". Back then it was just Usenet newsgroups and private BBS forums. Email was clunky, awkward, and not worth the effort. In those days the USPS was more reliable and cheaper.

Starting two or three years before 9/11, I began to notice a disturbing trend toward factionalism. The still small and eccentric Usenet world was clearly falling out into two camps. At the time, I had no real name for them. One group favored socialism, social justice, social responsibility, and "democracy", although they seemed to use a different definition for it than I did. The other group favored freedom, individualism, as little government as possible, and a society as close to anarchy as we could get without completely unraveling. I thought both groups were crazy, but in the days and weeks immediately before 9/11 true free-thinking individualism seemed to have vanished entirely in favor of one group or the other. There were far too many days when I found myself deep into a flame war with both groups. Days like that left me wondering how on earth I had managed to anger two such complete opposites.

The internet arrived at a very odd time socially. Ruby Ridge in 1992 was quickly followed by Waco in 1993, then OKC in 1995. Into the midst of this great social upheaval came the fastest, most complete, most effective communication network ever devised and it was available to anybody who could afford a connection. For five years (1996-2001) I watched in horror as people from all walks of life argued, fought, and worked themselves into a frenzy. I could feel a civil war bubbling up through the wires and felt powerless to do anything about it.

So I came up with a crazy plan. I concocted a science fiction alias named John Titor and began making posts warning of a civil war in 2005. Others took up the alias and made their own posts and before I realized what I'd done there were dozens, maybe hundreds of people from all over the globe who had taken up the theme and were claiming to be time travelers. John Titor had become a global phenomenon.

Then came 9/11, followed by Madrid and London and the world really was at war. Americans came together, Europeans fell apart, and I breathed a sigh of relief. No civil war and no sign of a civil war. I was not happy to see us fighting two wars at the same time, but I was very, very pleased that my John Titor predictions had failed.

Unfortunately, that was not the end of the story. As the "war on terror" began winding down and the internet became even better than it already was, those old divisions from the '90s began to reassert themselves. It is much harder now to pull off a "John Titor" kind of hoax, much easier to pull off something like "Anonymous" or "Wikileaks" (neither of which I'm associated with, by the way). Overall, this is a good thing. Unfortunately, it also means we in America are again choosing up sides and blasting out vitriol at anyone who disagrees with us. The one side simply wants the government to leave them alone and let them get on with their lives, the other side wants the government to keep the first group in line, tax them into non-existence, take away their firearms, and lock them up in prison for opposing the "enlightened" and "progressive" agenda of the "intellectuals".

For about a year now, but most especially since the November election, I have wanted to write a post. Instead of playing John Titor, I wanted to list up the events that absolutely will take place if we continue along the current trajectory. The only real evidence I have for this theory is understanding a bit about pre-WWII Germany and Japan, the creation of the Soviet Union, and memories of living through the last two decades of the Cold War. I see history repeating itself in the streets, discussion forums, and social networking sites of the internet. Some of these arguments are word for word identical to arguments in the opinion pages of national newspapers during those periods of history. The divisiveness, the anger, the demands for freedom versus the demands for "rational controls", with both sides claiming "common sense" as their strongest evidence.

I'm the guy who dreamed up John Titor. I'm supposed to be the crazy one! So why does the whole nation look insane to me?

Anyway, all of that aside, this is the real reason for today's post. Someone with more guts than I have is seeing the same trajectory with the same endgame. It's not some conspiracy backed by Freemasons, or the Illuminati, or "evil bankers". No. Just the opposite, in fact. The real problem is YOU, whoever you are, whatever you do, sitting there reading this crazy man's claim to have authored the single greatest internet hoax in history. You are the problem.

The good news is there is something you can do about it. It is a very hard thing, but until you change we will continue right down this path until it explodes in bloodshed and chaos only to end in complete, total tyranny. You can stop the civil war from ever arriving, but you have to decide to do it. Here is how:

1. Stop relying on the news media, do your own research
2. Stop using credit cards, car loans, and double mortgages
3. Save a little money, buy some silver and if you can afford it, some gold
4. Plant as much of your own fruit and vegetables as you can, focus on using heirloom varieties
5. Love your family, accept your crazy friends for who they are, and for heaven's sake, stop arguing
6. Learn the difference between right and wrong and realize why they exist
7. Accept that someday you will get old and die
8. Remember, there are evil people in the world who will hurt you if they can
9. Last, most important of all, stop blaming others for your problems and stop depending on someone else to solve your problems for you

I am not optimistic. I remain convinced that the past decade was an anomaly. Now that the "war on terror" is closing down, terrorism itself is about to raise up its ugly head and explode onto the world stage again. There will be another 9/11 style attack. It is not a matter of "if". It is strictly a question of "when". These people are dedicated, fanatic, and intelligent. Sooner or later they will succeed. Likewise, there will be another mass shooting. Crazy people are not going to suddenly become sane just because you treat them well. Sooner or later one of those crazy people will go out and kill dozens, maybe hundreds of people. There has never been a moment in human history when we did not have both terrorists and crazy people. They have been with us from the beginning. They will be with us right up until the day we go extinct. There is no golden past, no golden present, and there will not be a golden future. No, it isn't pretty, but it is real.

In closing, here is a link to Bob Owens' blog post: What you'll see in the rebellion.

This rebellion is coming. It has been trying to break out ever since Ronald Reagan won his re-election by a landslide. It will probably come very soon, possibly as soon as the winter of 2014-2015. It will be bloody. Millions of good, honest, ordinary men and women will die.

Unless you change. Changing your life by becoming more self-sufficient will not only make you happier, it will help delay the coming Second American Civil War. If enough of you change, it might even prevent it altogether.

Update: January 5, 2013

Bob Owens has another important post today: Of Alarms, Militias, and Destiny
The NRA-ILA has a list of Congressional bills coming out on Jan. 22: First Wave of Anti-gun Bills

This is going to get bloody. People are going to be dying in their homes and on the streets. If you work in law enforcement you must decide now if you are willing to sacrifice your life in order to enforce these laws and you must write to your representatives in the House of Representatives and the Senate to let them know. It might be the only way to prevent these bills from becoming law.

If you're not already a "Doomsday Prepper" now is the time to become one. You have just about three months to get ready, maybe six.

I've been wondering the heck Eric Holder has been doing because he sure as heck hasn't been investigating Fast and Furious. I guess now I know.

Humbug 2012

My annoyance meter began filling up a few days before Christmas when two things happened:
1. Someone sent me a link to a two-hour long conspiracy movie called "Thrive"
2. Piers Morgan blasted John Lott, Jr. on CNN with an anti-gun rant that did not contain a single real-world fact

Since then radicals right and left have appeared out of nowhere blasting their silliness all over the internet and the airwaves. I can't turn on any of the news channels without encountering some idiotic talking head spouting imaginary facts and figures to support whichever side of whatever equation they pretend to be qualified to argue about. What happened to news? You know, real news about people in trouble, people hit by terrible weather, earthquakes, tidal waves, street protests, and so on? For the past week or so the Wayne County Sheriff's Facebook account has been a better source of real news than all of the 24/7 news channels combined. I've seen more pure, unadulterated propaganda over the past week than all of the hours and hours of old movie reels I had to sit through in four years of history studies at Sophia University. Instead of "news channels" they ought be honest and label themselves, "official opinion guidance outlets".

Yeah, I know. I'm overreacting and ranting like a madman. It's been that kind of a week. I am fifty-one years old and I've had many Christmas holidays where I allied with Scrooge far more than Bob Cratchit. 2012 is just the most recent.

CCW Stopped the Oregon Mall Shooter

Remember this: 3 Dead in Oregon Mall Shooting

Have you ever wondered why he shot himself after killing two people? It turns out his gun jammed and at that point he was confronted by a man with a concealed carry permit.
The Right Perspective: Gun Owner Confronted Oregon Mall Shooter

The lesson to be learned here is simple: an armed citizen stopped a psychopath intent on killing as many people as possible and in doing so, saved countless lives.

Here are two highly relevant petitions at Whitehouse.gov:
Deport Piers Morgan
Implement the NRA School Shield Program

And, as long as I'm on the subject, it turns out that Great Britain the "success story" lauded constantly by Piers Morgan, the Brady Campaign, and everyone else who supports tyranny by disarming citizens is the most violent country in Europe, and one of the most violent in the world. That "gun ban" is not working out so well for them.

NRA Proposes a Real Solution

The NRA held a news conference today, exactly one week after 27 people were slaughtered in Newtown, Connecticut by a lunatic with stolen guns. Their solution is not new, but the framework they are providing for it is new. They are offering to teach schools how to improve their physical security and how to organize a volunteer force of security personnel from the surrounding community. The NRA will pay for the consultation and will provide experts to guide the school through the process. Here is the website for their new program: NRA National School Shield

To my way of thinking, this is a genuine solution that if implemented, will improve the safety and security of our schools. There are risks, of course. After all, someone will be responsible for controlling the firearms stored on campus and for approving the volunteers who serve as security. I have no doubt that in 99% of the cases every school that implements this program will provide a safer environment for children to learn in. I can also guarantee that somewhere in the nation there will one or two schools where the system provides the tools for an insane person to kill those children.

Nonetheless, the answer being proposed by the NRA is far safer, far more comprehensive, and far more rational than increased gun control, bringing back the misnamed "Assault Weapons Ban", or attempting to write yet another a law designed to prevent insane people from getting their hands on firearms. Such laws are doomed to fail. If reduced personal freedom and increased government interference in daily life is the solution the federal government pursues than there will be many more massacres like the ones at Shady Hook Elementary School, Columbine High School, Virginia Tech, and so on. The only way to minimize these tragedies is to pursue the NRA solution or something similar. It will not eliminate them entirely. I'm sorry, but there is no utopia this side of heaven and there is no realistic way to eliminate violent psychosis and the damage it inflicts on our society. The only realistic response to the very real problem of violent lunatics with guns is trained security personnel armed with the best firearms available. Those trained security personnel can be teachers, uniformed guards, uniformed police, or community volunteers. It does not matter where they come from. The key is careful selection and continuous training.

I wish every school in America would take advantage of the NRA School Shield program. Sadly, they won't. Very few of them will. Because they won't, there will be many more school massacres, more children shot down by insane men with illegal firearms, and more shrill calls for repealing or gutting the Second Amendment and transforming free, sovereign American citizens into serfs, peasants, and slaves.

In the midst of the blood dance, a new voice

The Blue Review: I am Adam Lanza's Mother

Don't skip over that link! Go back. Click on it. Read the entirely of the blog post you find there. As the anti-gun triads blaze out across the airwaves led in large part by a series of propaganda articles and op-eds at the daily more Marxist-oriented CNN, it is refreshing to find a new voice finally entering the debate. "I am Adam Lanza's Mother" tells the story of one woman's struggle and heartbreak in dealing with a son suffering from severe mental illness. This is the real issue. This is the real discussion we need to have in our newspapers, our television programs, and our online social networks. The real problem is neither guns nor violent media. What plagues America and leads directly to mass shootings in diverse places is a broken, failed mental health system.

Once upon a time in America anyone who was diagnosed with any form of emotional or intellectual diversion from the "norm" was quickly confined to an asylum. Many of these places (although not all of them) were absolute hell-holes where the "patients" were tortured, sexually abused, physically abused, harassed and humiliated all in the name of "research". We've come a long ways over the course of my lifetime. The worst of these institutions were shut down while I was still a child. The remaining ones were reformed from the inside out. Things are so much better now that anyone with the financial means to do so can check themselves into a modern "retreat" where they will receive a comfortable room and three meals a day along with both personal and group counselling sessions. If the "retreat" in question specializes in treatment for drug and alcohol addiction it might even proudly use the term "rehabilitation center" in its name. For those with access to good financial resources there is almost no limit to the degree of luxury they can enjoy while being treated for depression, addiction, or even a severe condition such as schizophrenia. The more money you have the better the treatment you can receive.

Unfortunately, the poor, the indigent, the homeless, and even the working middle class do not have the resources to access our modern mental health system. Granted, there are psychologists and licensed social workers available for weekly or biweekly counselling sessions at quite reasonable rates, for children and adults suffering from severe mental illness there are very few options inexpensive enough for a solid middle class family to fall back on. For the working poor and the unemployed there is nothing at all. Even worse, the stigma and social isolation that can result from seeking treatment for a troubled child or even yourself can rise to extreme levels of intolerance. Mental illness is one of the few conditions where seeking treatment can cause you to be fired, suspended, or placed on permanent unpaid leave. No one will fire you for seeing a doctor about the flu or after suffering a heart attack, but if your boss finds out you are seeing a licensed social worker every Friday night in order to talk about your paranoia you could easily show up for work one day only to find yourself locked out of the premises and told never to return.

If we are serious about desiring to prevent the next mass shooting there are two things we simply must do: insure every law-abiding American who is willing to take responsibility for their own safety and the safety of others has the freedom to do so and see to it that individuals suffering from mental illness have the freedom to seek treatment without suffering permanent social isolation from their friends, family, and co-workers. If we really want to see a law passed that will help prevent the next mass shooting, then instead of seeking to limit the freedoms of gun-owning Americans we need to demand passage of a law that will prevent employers from firing people who seek treatment for mental illness. If you really want to improve America's health insurance system, then instead of handing over the entire health system to government control we need to seek ways to encourage offering better insurance coverage for mental illness.

We need better tools for dealing with, treating, and healing mental illness. We don't need better tools for punishing law-abiding Americans just because they own firearms.

Added later the same day:

We almost got this conversation started back in 2007 in the days following the Virginia Tech shooting. Even though Time Magazine published a pretty good analysis of Cho Seung-Hui's character and personality, the media-led cultural conversation quickly deteriorated into high capacity magazines and assault weapons. I hope we do not make the same mistake this time. I wrote about this issue on April 18, 2007 in the post "Culture and Crime".

Update December 29, 2012

People have asked what I mean by "blood dance". Well, this CNN video is a perfect example. Sen. Lieberman is dancing in the blood of the Sandy Hook Elementary school children in an effort to control how I (and tens of millions like me) live, think, act, and feel. He is using their tragic deaths to advance an agenda that will neither slow nor stop the tide of violence. Instead, it will only restrict the rights and freedoms of responsible, law-abiding Americans. CNN for their part has carefully framed this video with the clear editorial intent to make Sen. Lieberman seem rational and Wayne LaPierre seem callus. By doing so, they have joined Sen. Lieberman in his blood dance.

Renewing the assault weapon ban will not help

I hate that it has become necessary to make this kind of post in the midst of the Christmas season. Nonetheless, as President Obama and his allies prepare to dance in the blood of children in order to propagandize their desire for total control over the American people by taking away their freedom to own firearms the truth must be brought into the cold light of day.

This story is a terrible tragedy:
Police respond to active shooter at Connecticut school

It also immediately calls to mind another terrible tragedy at another school:
Beslan school hostage crisis

Russia has long had extremely strict controls over civilian ownership of firearms. That did not stop a band of terrorists from taking over a school, lining it with explosives, and eventually killing over three hundred people, including over a hundred and fifty children. The tragedy in Connecticut is a terrible loss of innocent life. I cannot comprehend the depth of insanity an individual must sink to in order to walk into an elementary school in full battle dress and slaughter unarmed school teachers and their students. Granted, his ability to purchase semi-automatic weapons and the ammunition for those weapons helped him achieve his horrifying goal, there are tens of millions of similar weapons in the hands of law-abiding Americans who would never use those weapons against innocent people. It is unfair, and stupidly unrealistic, to assume that strict gun control laws such as those in Russia would have had any impact at all on the events that unfolded in Connecticut today.

In Israel, teachers who have licenses to carry concealed weapons are encouraged to carry those weapons at work. This is a far more realistic solution to limiting and preventing these kinds of mass shootings. The only real-world method that has been proven effective in thwarting the designs of murderers, terrorists, and other malcontents is greater proliferation of private citizens who are armed, trained, and prepared to use those firearms in defense of themselves, their families and other innocents. The first line of defense in any violent confrontation is always the intended victim. If that victim has the means and the wherewithal to rise to the occasion and destroy the predator threatening them then the incident will be over before it even begins.

Armed staff and teachers could have prevented the tragedy at Beslan. Armed staff and teachers could have prevented the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School. Armed citizens are the only genuinely effective means for preventing and discouraging insane people from taking the lives of innocent people.

Christmas without Christ is meaningless

I am 51 years old. I'm not going to go into all the ways modern Christmas incorporates pagan iconography and ritual. At this point in my life the one Christmas truth I have learned is that it does not matter how a person celebrates Christmas. The only truly important aspect of this season is recognizing it, rejoicing in it, and taking a moment to remember that we are called to love one another, especially those that mistreat us, abuse us, and seek to destroy us. We are called to love our enemies even more than we love our friends and families. After all, it is easy to love those who support you, who lift you up, who give you the strength to make it through the day. Even the most evil, self-centered narcissist has enough common sense to treat the people who support them with love and respect. Loving those who love you proves nothing and Christmas is the one holy day above all others where we are forced to face this hard truth head on and accept the fact that we have repeatedly failed to live up to the standards Christ set for us. This is a good thing, by the way. Failure is how we learn.

I don't hate the modern, militant atheist movement that is seeking to remove Christ from Christmas. I don't pity them, I don't feel sorry for them, and of course, I don't sympathize with them. They are only doing what they feel is right. However, I must point out that if you remove Christ from Christmas, what is left? Seriously, why have a midwinter holy day based on peace, love and joy without Christ? There has never been a midwinter pagan celebration based on peace, love and joy. Every historic pagan midwinter feast, sacrifice, bonfire, and orgy is based on fear. The key difference between the pagan holy days and the Christian celebration of Christmas is that Christmas is the one midwinter holy day based on something other than the fear that the sun will not return and the world will be forever locked in snow and ice. Christmas is a celebration of freedom from earthly fears and the promise of eternity in a paradise so amazing that we who live on this material plane cannot even imagine it. Christmas took all of those pagan traditions of fear, death, and anxiety and transformed them into a celebration of life both here and in heaven. Christmas is the celebration of the birth of the Christ child, the promised savior of both the children of Abraham and the world at large.

That is why it is so deeply and profoundly ironic that so much time, effort, and money is being spent to erase Christ from Christmas. It is richly ironic that after spending two thousand years incorporating pagan iconography into the celebration of Christ's birth the pagans themselves are now seeking to remove Christ entirely and revert back to the fearful, nightmarish imaginative world where midwinter is the death of everything. Alongside that death and inseparable from it rests the horrifying thought that this time the ice might not retreat, the snow might not melt, and the ice age that very nearly drove the human animal to extinction might return to claim our society, our loved ones, and our very lives. Without Christ's birth as the central theme, there is no joyous midwinter celebration. Without Christ there is only the fear of the death, once, eternal, all-encompassing, and permanent. Not just the death of the individual, but the very death of humanity itself.

So let them try. Let them sign petitions, launch legal suits, force Christ out of the schools, off the Fire Department lawn, and out of the department stores. Let the atheists and their pagan allies have their Christless Christmas. Let them remember once and for all just why it is we celebrate Christmas. The power of Christianity, the reason it swept through the pagan lands driving every superstition, every idol, and every magical system before it into extinction is not because of superior weapons, superior technology, or superior culture. Christianity defeated all of those ancient religions for one reason and one reason only: Christianity is the only religion based on hope for a better world both here and in eternity. Not Buddhism, not Islam, not any form of animism, not Wiccan ritual nor Druidic practice, only Christianity is based on the belief that God himself came to his creation as a baby child set asleep among the livestock in order to bring directly to us the one gift no other religion has ever dared to offer: eternal life in partnership with the creator.

So I am not the least bit worried about the "war on Christmas". Even if they succeed, the only thing they will find is a hollow victory, a meaningless consumer holiday, and a return to the fear of death that drove humanity out of the simplicity of a hunter-gatherer lifestyle and into the sweat, toil, and downward spiral of agriculture, massive warfare, tyranny, and "higher civilization". If they remove Christ from Christmas it will take less than a single generation before they are begging for us to change it back. Without Christ, there is no Christmas. Without Christ there is only a tyrannical priest guiding the ignorant in a fearful ritual to reignite the sun and bring back the spring.
