I know I have not written many posts over the past year. Out here in the real world my life has become somewhat more complicated than I expected it to be. As a result, I'm not certain how actively I will be posting this election season. This could be a very sparse year. My apologies.
Today's post is the result of a flood of links that has appeared in my Twitter and Facebook feeds over the past few weeks. I'm not going to link any of them here because I do not want to provide the writers any more exposure than they already enjoy. However, there are a few misconceptions that must be addressed:
Biblical Christianity is no different than violent Islamofacism!
Biblical Christianity hates homosexuality!
Biblical Christianity hates minorities!
Biblical Christianity lacks compassion for the poor!
Biblical Christianity is the sole province of rich, white, old men!
Biblical Christianity is regressive!
I could address each one of these in turn. But I'm not going to. Instead, at the bottom of this post you will find five books written by men far more intelligent than myself. You, dear reader, have a choice. You can dismiss these books as irrelevant and not worth your time. You certainly have that freedom. Or, you can read them and consider the possibility that the clarion call to condemn Bible-believing Christians as terrorists and luddites is, in fact, mistaken. I cannot control your choices, nor do I want to. A few of the questions you might want to ask yourself are:
If Christians are the bigots, why are they being slaughtered by terrorists and condemned by political pundits?
If Christians are the bigots, shouldn't they be the ones doing the killing and condemning?
Which is more evil, declining to support a gay wedding or spray painting, vandalizing, and threatening to burn down a small business owned by Christians?
Which is more progressive, building and funding a Children's hospital in Kenya or demanding a veteran's memorial be dismantled?
Which is more compassionate, feeding the homeless or forcing them off of empty, abandoned land the owner has no use for?
Which is more modern, paying for my neighbor's internet access or blocking access to Bible Study websites at the local high school?
Where can a lesbian band protest without fear of arrest, New York or Moscow?
Where are homosexuals being executed, Israel or Iran?
Where are women prohibited from driving, Texas or Saudi Arabia?
Where are good people allowed to use firearms in self-defense, Mexico or the United States?
“Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves. By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? Likewise, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them.
Not everyone who says to me, "Lord, Lord," will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will say to me on that day, "Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?"
Then I will tell them plainly, "I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!"
